On Thursday 19 April 2018, assistants and secretaries will take centre stage. Yes, that's right, it could be any day, but there's also World Chocolate Day, Music Day, Valentine's Day ... There is something for everyone. But in any case, we approve of this day!
A retrospective ...
Secretaries Day was first celebrated in 1952 in the United States under the leadership of the National Secretaries Association. The idea was to highlight the value of the secretarial profession and to show that companies needed their skills, loyalty and know-how. Since the United States was at that time experiencing great difficulty in recruiting qualified assistants, the objective of this day was was therefore also to restore the status to attract young people to this profession. In France, the day was not introduced until 1991. Today, there are about 2 million assistants and secretaries working in France! So Administrative Professionals Day is not just another commercial holiday invented by marketing experts.
Secretaries day: for or against?
For Bruneau, the annual celebration of the secretaries and assistants offers the opportunity to wish them a happy day and tell them how much we love them! We know (and recognize) the value of an assistant for the smooth functioning of the team and the company: versatility, discretion, efficiency, good humor, responsiveness ... The list of their qualities is long, whatever their area of expertise! A largely female profession, but let's not forget the men who have joined the ranks throughout the years. :)
We want to wish our employees a happy holiday and suggest to everyone who works with them on a daily basis, to do the same: give them a little attention, flowers, chocolates, a nice message, a day off ..., a great opportunity to put them in the limelight.
That's our opinion. Yet this event is not necessarily unanimously appreciated by those involved. This is proven by the testimonials ...
Anaïs, 36 years old
"Secretaries Day is the only day of the year when people talk about us, it would be a shame to miss it! Some bosses play the game, that's good. But personally, mine never does anything, not even a bouquet of flowers!"
Christine, 38 years old
"I think it's great that we are being celebrated at least one day a year! For several years, my boss completely ignored this holiday, until last year... As there are several of us assistants in the company, I had put up posters in the company, which made the offices more lively..."
Janine, 52 years old
"I really want my party! To prove it, the day before, I write it down clearly in big and bold letters in my boss's agenda so that he has no excuse if he forgets! I put post-it notes all over his desk with numbers of florists, chocolate makers... It's true that I push a little, but my efforts are always rewarded!"
Cécile, 33 years old
"I think that this idea of an Administrative Professionals Day is really ridiculous, why not a President's Day, Cleaner's Day, Chef's Day .... And what are we supposed to do on that day? Are we supposed to wear special makeup? Are we supposed to wear a "today is my day" T-shirt? Really, I don't see the point!"
