How to secure your business at night?

Securing your business premises means taking the necessary measures to ensure that periods of vacancy run without a hitch. We call this simply "locking up", but with a slightly more methodical approach! How to secure your business at night?

Why do we need to secure our premises?

By taking very simple measures, it is possible to reduce the risks of damage, especially from fire, theft, hazards and deliberate damage. The majority of these occur at night, when the occupants are not present. A large-scale disaster in a company can lead to production disruptions and costs that might even jeopardise its survival.

What is the best way to protect your premises?

You must carry out a number of checks and predefined actions in order to reduce the vulnerability of your buildings and installations to the risks mentioned above. The responsibility for carrying out these actions is divided among several persons. They are personally assigned to one of the clearly defined zones of the company. This makes the workload acceptable.
1

SECTORIZATION

In the largest companies, each employee assigned to this task is responsible for his or her own department, service or workshop. For many small and medium-sized companies, the sectoral classification usually consists of a division into two parts: a tertiary part (offices) and an operational part (workshops).
The common areas must also be divided.
2

DESIGNATE A PERSON

The nominated person should be the last to leave. He or she must be specifically appointed. It does not always have to be the same person. On the contrary, if the burden is spread out, it will be experienced much less as coercion. By involving people in security, they will become more aware of the risks.
3

CREATE A CHECKLIST

You can list the actions to be taken in a dated table with checkboxes. Some points of attention:

Exits and entrances
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Skylights and rooflights
  • Safes and strongboxes

Energy and fluids
  • Desk and floor lamps (halogen = danger)
  • Printers and photocopiers (except for operational needs)
  • Computers
  • Coffee machines
  • Comfort fans, mobile air conditioners, space heaters
  • Gas valves
  • Compressors
  • Machinery

Setting up alarms
  • Technical alarms
  • Intrusion alarms
4

THE DAILY REPORT

An important but not essential element. After the closing and signature checks, a report can be deposited in a mailbox and then archived. Objective: tracing the action. This will be a real plus when you start negotiations with your insurer!
