Telecommuting: 5 tips for being efficient !

The COVID-19 pandemic has given a real boost to telework. Thousands of people work now at home, temporarly or permanent, without being really prepared for it. In order to work efficiently from a distance, your room needs to meet with certain standards. We will give you here some tips. :)
1

Create a real workspace

A work bubble. Finding your own space to work from home is essential in order to be productive. A separate room is ideal, but if necessary, you can set up your office in one of your common areas, provided you define the space well with partition walls, for example. It's important that it's really clear, especially when there are children at home!

A comfortable workplace. Telework needs to be executed in good conditions. Equip yourself with a real, adaptable office chair, an ergonomic keyboard and computer mouse, an office lamp...

Organize your day well

A daily planning. Set up every day clear goals, a scheme and a to-do list. To avoid problems, it is also important to determine a start and end time for yourself. And when you're done, except in case of an emergency, the workday is over! Do your best to stay on track and clear your mind after work.

Alternate your work and breaks. Do you know the "Pomodoro" method? It is a time management technique that has already proven its value. Simple and very efficient, it's a matter of dividing the work into intervals: you work 25 minutes, and it's time for a 5-minute break:) Test it yourself! If the timing is too tight, you can try to work 50 minutes and take a 10-minute break afterwards.

Provide a real break

Regular breaks. On top of the 5 or 10 minutes from the "Pomodoro" method, you can't neglect the obligatory breaks of the day: foresee enough free time! And you don't need to feel guilty. It is essential to relax sufficiently, in order to keep enough energy and concentration during the working hours.Try to put emergency cases and urgent work in the same perspective... If you don't answer your mail immediately, nobody will blame you. Or that's what we hope...!

A real lunch break. Take some time for a relaxing lunch break at noon. Don't keep your telephone within reach, so you won't be tempted to read your mails. They can wait till after 2pm.
Provide a real break A tip: are your children at home ? Is your spouse or roommate also teleworking? Let them know when you are working, set rules and give them a schedule with the time slots when you can't be disturbed, and those where you can be interrupted for a few moments ...

Keep up a healthy lifestyle

The right outfit. No need to put on your suit or best dress, but don't stay in your pajamas. Take a shower to wake up well and dress every morning as if you were going to work, or almost. It is very important to get into the right atmosphere... and you don't need to worry for an unexpected video conference!

Daily physical excercises. Working from home means less travel. So to stay in shape, 20 minutes of exercise a day is recommended! Take a walk outside? A little muscle exercise? Stretch? Go jogging? The choice is yoursI The important thing is sticking to it and doing it regularly. And what if you're out of inspiration?! Well that's a bad excuse, cause there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube!

Stay in contact with your colleagues

Organized video conferences. Do you miss your colleagues? ? Organise meetings at a distance via video conference or conference calls, in order to discuss the subject together with tthe team. It is much more efficient and pleasant than just exchanging emails on the same subject. Teams, Zoom, Skype,...There are enough available tools or software for these exchanges. A tip : equip yourself with a headphone with integrated micro, which helps you to communicate a lot easier :)

Virtual coffee breaks. During telework, you can feel sometimes a bit lonely, far away from your colleagues and the office atmosphere. Don't hesitate to use instant messenger apps, like Slack or Whatsapp for more informal conversations. And why not use them for digital coffee breaks, lunches or afterwork parties?
