The advent of Blu-ray technology has led to the introduction of high-capacity storage discs to meet the demand generated by the rapid rise of high-definition television (HDTV).
Blu-ray discs derive their name from blue laser technology. This blue color is due to the fact that the laser wavelength is shorter. The blue laser uses a wavelength of 405 nm, whereas the red laser technology for DVDs is 650 nm. Using a blue laser with a shorter wavelength allows data pits to be written smaller and thus significantly increases the amount of data on the disc.
